PSHE – curriculum information

At New Pastures Primary School we ensure our curriculum is fully inclusive to every child and provide a broad and , balanced curriculum that maximises the outcomes for every child. Our children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help them to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. We want our children to know, remember and understand more, become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand how they are developing personally and socially, and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Intent

  • To give opportunities for our children them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.
  • To develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life, the wider community and prepare children to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community
  • To develop learning that results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which enables children to access the wider curriculum
  • To put a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.

Implementation

We use the Jigsaw scheme along with utilising first hand experiences and sharing good practice to deliver the PSHE curriculum.

Progression in skills and knowledge in the subject is outlined in the Jigsaw progression grid and PSHE is included on our long term plan.

The curriculum is delivered throughout the whole school starting with a shared assembly each half term to introduce new topics. Topics covered are: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. Learning in each topic then takes place during weekly whole class Jigsaw lessons which explore the different themes. These themes are also embedded through all other lessons and the whole school day with everyone supporting and encouraging the children they interact with to use the skills they are developing and to make links to other areas of learning.

Our children plan and take part in many fund raising events such as Mc Millan coffee mornings, Sport relief, Comic relief and things relevant to the community e.g- local flood victims, raising money for the British heart foundation supporting a pupil for the community.

Impact

Through our PSHE curriculum, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become caring, respectful, responsible and confident individuals and citizens.

Monitoring and assessment is an on-going process. Teachers use ‘assessment for learning’ as to inform planning for future lessons.

Our children will know more remember more and understand more.
