MFL – curriculum information

At New Pastures Primary School we believe that learning a foreign language is a necessary part in being a member of the modern world in which we live. It fosters children`s curiosity and deepens knowledge and understanding of our multi – cultural society.

Intent

Our curriculum is designed to progressively develop pupils’ skills in another language and lay the foundations for future language learning.

We teach French as our main MFL and aim to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing needed to enable pupils to use and apply their language learning in a variety of contexts.

We aim to raise the awareness of our pupils of other languages that are spoken.

We have a desire for our pupils to be outward-looking citizens and to develop their understanding of the culture of France as well as the spoken language.

Implementation

We follow La Jolie Ronde Scheme of work so that pupils progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary around topics.

Pupils are encouraged to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversation, activities, songs and games and as their confidence grows with pictures, captions and sentences.

Displays and vocabulary are used in different languages also to celebrate and inform on the diversity in the school.

French days are planned in the year including sampling typical French food.

Impact

Our pupils leave school with a foundation for future language learning. They know and remember more.

Assessment through learning ensures future lessons are planned/adapted.

Our pupils gain more awareness of other languages that are spoken and can relate this to different languages found within the school community.

Pupils’ perspectives will grow concerning their own lives and the lives of others through understanding how cultures in other countries can be similar or different their own.
